Shearing llamas for the summer months is very important. Llamas can experience life threatening health problems with extreme temperature changes. Here are a few llama health related facts that may be helpful to new llama owners:
A normal rectal temperature for an adult llama is 99-101.8 degrees and a normal baby llama's rectal temperature is 100-102.2 degrees.
Signs of heat related stress are rectal temperatures of 103 to 104 degrees.
Physical symptoms of heat stress may include panting, swollen testicles, problems with coordination, seizues, laying down and death.
Death from heat stress occurs when the llama's temperature reaches 10 degress above the normal body temperature.
It is very important to shear your llamas in the spring to help prevent heat stress. We recommend shearing llamas in the spring to allow the wool to grow during the summer months providing warmth for the llamas in the winter months.
